  • CCC or CWP projects

IMG_3073I guess we had a lot of rocks sitting around cause we have all kinds of things built around town by the CCC during the depression.

We have a football stadium that is still in use and this is the back side of the bleachers at the baseball field down at the city park.

We even have a state park west of town where they made bridges and other types of structures.

  • Hi Jilly,

    Interesting.

The only thing I have noticed is the letters WPA with date on some of our sidewalks.

    frank

    • Frank, it was before you were born in the 1930's they were young boys who were at the age to fall in love -like 16yr old and older and younger I'm sure they lied about their ages to get a job.
It was during the depression and they needed money for their family.

  • Jil, I have difficulty to figure the dimensions of what is pictured and even to say what it is. I fear to be completely wrong in saying anything. Something to compare would be needed for me .
    Love

    • it's about 10 feet tall and on the other side is bleachers. I'm sure the wood has been replaced since the 1930's I will have to take a photo of the other side of the wall. The boys in the CCC were put to work during the depression by Roosevelt and given money to send home and they could keep some for themselves.
They were at the age to be in love. 15yr old and up.

  • WPA build our town a huge swimming pool in the shape of the state of Georgia...it was a good program. I love the heart built into the wall!

    • that sounds cool. My friend who is in her 70's said her dad was in the CCC and built Tucker Tower out of stone up in Oklahoma and we got to see it once and go in it.
our swimming pool was also built by the boys during the 30's and it was old, old and aobut 10yrs they dug it up and built a new one in it's place cause they said that it would cost too much to just improve it.
Well, I doubt it because this new water park cost a lot of money and instead of 50 cents for kids and 75 cents for adults it's $15 and $10 and that's too much if you have kids. They didn't ask me though.

  • We need something like the CCC now.

  • The CCC built so many wonderful walls and walkways in our parks and cities! Our Battel Park has a wonderful fountain with a stone wall and sunken garden thanks to the CCC.

    • yes, so much of what they did in our town is still there and it was sad when they tore out the old pool since we all swam in it.
I really thought they would find a body under it from long ago and we would have a good mystery on our hands. LOL
